Mega Human 9 [a] is a 2008 activeness-platform video game adult past Capcom and Inti Creates. It is the 9th numbered game in the original Mega Human series (Or 10th game overall when including Mega Homo & Bass). Mega Man 9 is the showtime dwelling house panel game in the original Mega Man series since Mega Man 8 and Mega Man & Bass, which were released at least one decade earlier. Mega Man 9 was the first game in the series not to take a physical release, and was initially released only on the downloadable gaming services WiiWare, PlayStation Network (PSN), and Xbox Alive Arcade (XBLA). In June 2017, it was announced that Mega Man nine and 10 would accept a physical release with their inclusion in Mega Human being Legacy Collection 2 for PlayStation four, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows, along with a digital version released for Nintendo Switch in May 2018.

Taking place during the early 21st century, Mega Human being 9 continues the adventures of the android hero Mega Man. When destructive attacks by powerful robots brainstorm occurring all over the globe, Mega Man's creator, the skillful-hearted Dr. Light, is blamed. Mega Man's arch enemy, the evil Dr. Wily, claims to be uninvolved in the incidents. It is up to Mega Man to terminate the robots, evidence his creator's innocence, and reveal Wily's true intentions. Mega Man 9 uses the classic 2D side-scrolling gameplay on which the series is based. Using both action and platforming elements, the player must complete a series of viii, initial stages in any order desired. Defeating each stage'south "Robot Master" dominate copies its unique weapon, which the histrion can select at will throughout the remainder of the game.

Although the game was developed for modern consoles, Mega Human being 9 features familiar 8-bit visuals and audio similar to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) as a "retro" throwback to the earliest entries in the franchise. According to its producers Keiji Inafune and Hironobu Takeshita, the development team intentionally made the graphics, sound, and gameplay of Mega Homo 9 equally simple as possible to adhere to the likeness of the fan and critical favorite Mega Man 2, released in 1988. Mega Homo 9 was a commercial success and received mostly positive reviews from the printing. The game's popularity prompted Capcom to create a sequel, Mega Human being 10, which also utilizes a unproblematic, viii-scrap style.

Plot [edit]

Similar previous entries in the series, the fictional events of Mega Homo 9 have place during the 21st century ("20XX"). Dr. Calorie-free, the creator of the globe'southward greatest android hero Mega Homo, is blamed when several quondam and outdated models of "Robot Masters" he created all of a sudden become on a destructive rampage.[6] [7] Mega Man's nemesis Dr. Wily has no apparent connection to information technology.[8] After showing a news video of Light declaring planetary domination and Wily refusing to follow him, Wily announces that he needs monetary donations to complete the robots he congenital to combat those of Dr. Light.[ix] Mega Homo vows to fight to prove his creator'due south innocence and expose Wily's true intentions.[7] After Mega Man begins combating the eight Robot Masters—Concrete Human being, Splash Woman, Magma Human, Hornet Man, Precious stone Homo, Tornado Human, Plug Man, and Galaxy Man[6]—Low-cal is soon arrested. During the victory over the fourth Robot Main, a piece of scrap metal is left behind, revealing that the robot was shortly due for recycling.[10] Mega Homo somewhen picks up the last Robot Master's retentiveness chip, which is analyzed to reveal Dr. Wily vowing to aid the robots survive this expiration date and ultimately reprogramming them.[xi] Even so, earlier the information tin can become public, Wily swoops in using his flying saucer and steals the bit.

Mega Man breaks into Wily'southward robot metropolis, which is guarded by powerful robots Wily congenital with the crowd's donations. Mega Man fights and defeats Wily, who immediately begs for forgiveness, at which point Mega Man scolds Wily by reminding him of all his begging from all previous main Mega Homo serial games. Mega Man then discovers that Wily was responsible for arresting Dr. Light, and that Lite has fallen sick. However, Mega Human being's ally Proto Homo comes in and warns the hero that it is a trap, stating that the seemingly sick scientist is an impostor previously used by Wily to make the initial news video.[12] Mega Human then takes his chances with Calorie-free and the impostor shocks him; Wily escapes while he is disabled. When the fortress comes down on him, Proto Man returns speedily to save him. In the finish, Dr. Calorie-free is freed, and the condition quo is restored.[xiii] The eight Robot Masters are rebuilt and given new functions working alongside Low-cal and his other robots.

Gameplay [edit]

Mega Man battles mini-dominate Hanabiran in Hornet Human's phase. The game features the aforementioned graphics and gameplay of NES-era Mega Man games.

Mega Homo 9 is an activeness-platform game in which the histrion controls the titular character and must consummate a number of 2D side-scrolling stages. The start of the game presents a select screen of eight stages from which the role player can choose to complete in any guild desired.[6] [vii] Within each stage, the player advances by running, jumping, avoiding traps, shooting enemies and mini-bosses, and ultimately battling the Robot Master boss at the end. Mega Human begins with a "Mega Buster" arm-cannon weapon, but as each boss is defeated, a unique weapon is added to his armory. Because each Robot Master is weak to a specific weapon, the player may strategize the order in which the stages are cleared.[7] The player as well begins the game with the option to phone call on Mega Human being's dog Blitz, who tin can transform into a "Coil" springboard for jumping higher or a "Jet" for traversing long distances in the air.[14] Mega Human's health, his special weapons, and his Rush options are all express by energy gauges that can be refilled past picking up items plant throughout each level. Special screws can also be picked up and used to purchase items at Automobile's shop between stages. These items include extra lives, tanks that refill free energy, and one-fourth dimension-utilise items that call on Mega Man's companions Eddie and Vanquish for aid.[7]

Using the original Mega Man and Mega Homo 2 as the principal inspiration for the gameplay in Mega Homo nine, several significant features from previous games were left out. Specifically, Mega Man lacks the ability to slide along the ground and the ability to charge up his Mega Buster for more powerful shots.[6] [7] [15] Aside from using or omitting various elements from past games in the series, Mega Man 9 introduces a time set on style and fifty optional challenges where certain requirements should be met to be accomplished. These range from defeating a boss using only the Mega Buster to immigration the unabridged game without taking whatsoever damage.[7] [14] Downloadable content for all iii versions of the game was fabricated available for purchase during October 2008. Proto Homo can be downloaded as an alternate playable character. Proto Human is able to slide, can charge up his buster, and takes double the impairment of Mega Homo, among other differences.[16] Additional downloadable add together-ons include college difficulty modes, an countless stage, and a special stage featuring a new boss, Fake Homo.[17] [xviii] This downloadable content was included in Mega Man Legacy Collection 2, requiring the player to complete the game or enter a hush-hush cheat lawmaking.[19]

Development [edit]

Mega Man 9 was co-adult by Capcom and Inti Creates. The latter visitor had developed the Mega Human being Zero and Mega Man ZX spin-off series and employs many former Capcom members who worked on previous Mega Man games.[6] [xv] [20] [21] The first six games in the original Mega Man serial were created for the NES during the tardily 1980s and early 1990s.[22] A plethora of spin-off series, related games, and compilations were published by Capcom as a result of the original series' immense popularity. The about recent entries in the main series, Mega Man 8 and Mega Man & Bass, were start released on more advanced home consoles in 1996 and 1998 respectively.[22] Keiji Inafune, a designer, artist, and producer at Capcom, has been involved in most of franchise'south evolution. As early as 2004, Inafune, credited as "Inafking", publicly expressed his desire to make a Mega Human nine as a "throwback to the super former schoolhouse", but that its creation would highly depend on the input of fans.[22] [23] According to Inafune, the unproblematic fun of a classic Mega Man game "doesn't fit into the grandiose and expansive world that the consumer gaming manufacture has become, and then y'all have to make games that match the current expectations". He also believed that pushing for the creation of a Mega Man in the mode of the original "would be chop-chop criticized for things similar being simplistic, outdated, or too expensive", thus making it too difficult to develop such games in the current climate.[6]

Inafune cited the rise of retrogaming services similar Nintendo's Virtual Console for assuasive the development team to put together Mega Man 9.[half dozen] Not only does the game carry the gameplay and storyline elements of older games, Mega Homo 9 is a render to the series' roots, as the graphics and music resemble how their original games looked and sounded on the NES's eight-bit hardware.[half dozen] Inafune felt that the "fourth dimension was correct" for choosing this manner of game to delight its fans.[6] [15] Capcom's management was supportive in making Mega Man 9 downloadable, but they wanted the game to be 3D instead of eight-bit as they thought the latter would merely appeal to Mega Man fans. The team additionally discussed giving players the choice to choose betwixt eight-bit and current generation styles.[24] However, the idea for solely using 8-scrap eventually won out.[25] The staff was concerned with surpassing Mega Homo 2 rather than Mega Man 8, as the second installment in the series tends to receive the most disquisitional praise.[vi] [xv] [18] [20] [24] Producer Hironobu Takeshita referred to Mega Man 9 every bit "the new Mega Man three" in this regard.[26]

The evolution team that worked on Mega Homo nine consisted of most 20 people total.[6] Takeshita explained that although Inti Creates used their previous experience to create the gameplay, the technical aspects like the graphics and sound, were more difficult to finetune. As the team had a tendency to make these attributes circuitous, Inafune would often scold them to simplify their work and "bring it dorsum to the nuts".[20] [21] Rather than use NES technology, Mega Human 9 runs on a new, proprietary engine that simulates the beliefs of 8-flake video games. The game even includes "Legacy Mode", which emulates the low video processing power of the NES past partially rendering sprites, thus causing them to flicker when too many are on screen simultaneously.[xx] [26] The developers also considered distributing the game on NES cartridges, simply without technology to span the gap between the cartridges and current gaming hardware, the thought was scrapped.[25] Takeshita antiseptic that Mega Homo 9 is much too big to actually fit on an NES cartridge.[20] [26] Inafune designed both Plug Homo and Splash Woman, while the artists at Inti Creates created the remaining six Robot Masters. Plug Man was used equally an instance to guide the younger designers in making characters with simple notwithstanding unique features. The idea for Splash Woman, the first female Robot Master of the original series, was requested by the planning team.[18] Hornet Man was originally conceived as another female Robot Main named "Honey Adult female" earlier being changed to a male person after Inafune presented his pattern of Splash Woman.[xviii] [27]

Audio [edit]

The musical score and sound effects for Mega Man ix were composed by Ippo Yamada, Ryo Kawakami, Yu Shimoda, and Hiroki Isogai.[28] Yamada, a veteran composer for Capcom at this point, worked "with a sense of nostalgia", while the younger designers had to report and imitate the older games.[29] Audio director Yu Shimoda analyzed the sound of the NES Mega Human games for several months before beginning the project.[28] Yamada insisted that the game contains no actual NES music, but rather the "spirit of NES music", as no such hardware restrictions were present as they had been during the evolution of the first six games.[26] [28] Most of the tracks were created with the quality of these past games in heed, but only a handful actually reference songs from previous games. Character and levels designs were "fundamental to the process of generating the music".[28] Computers running Music Macro Language were used to produce the game'southward sound furnishings. Yamada explained that taking away the sound of charging up the Mega Buster allowed for many more audio waves that it would have obscured or blocked out.[28] Still, as a spiritual successor to Mega Human being two, layers of background music were deliberately designed to drop out when simultaneously heard with sure sound furnishings as they did in that game.[30]

Release [edit]

Capcom officially appear Mega Man 9 during July 2008.[31] Official details were commencement confirmed via the magazines Weekly Famitsu and Nintendo Ability, revealing that the title would exist actualization on the Nintendo Wii as a WiiWare title.[6] [32] It was initially slated to be exclusive to WiiWare, with earlier reports of Microsoft's XBLA and Sony's PSN editions being denied by Capcom.[33] [34] Gaming sites like IGN confirmed it for PSN and XBLA shortly thereafter.[35] Various regions including North America, Nippon, Europe, and Australia saw releases of the game betwixt September 2008 and June 2009.[1] [3] [2] [4] A mobile telephone incarnation of Mega Man ix was also released in Japan in belatedly 2010.[5]

The Due north American promotional artwork for the game, designed past Gerald de Jesus of iam8bit, was meant to be reminiscent of the domestic comprehend art for the original Mega Human game. According to Capcom employee Chris Kramer, the marketing group felt that if they were going to release a game that graphically resembled one that came from 1987, information technology would be best to have the marketing campaign reflect that.[36] T-shirts bearing the artwork were created for Inafune and Takeshita to wear at the game's official debut at the Electronic Entertainment Expo during the summertime of 2008. The T-shirts were afterwards made bachelor to the public via Capcom'due south online store.[36] A "limited edition" printing kit, intended for members of the media, using that same embrace art was then created by iam8bit. Being as true-blue to the original 1987 release as possible, the iam8bit crew disassembled ane-thousand vintage NES cartridges and inserted mini CDs inside. Though the CDs do not contain the actual game, they characteristic an assortment of screenshots, artwork, and game information. That was then packaged in a custom-created, classic-looking NES box, complete with compress-wrap and deal bin toll tags.[37] The printing kit was also put on sale at Capcom'south store.[38]

To help promote the game in Japan, Capcom released trade including "Eastward-Tank" energy drinks and two CD soundtracks.[39] The Rockman 9 Original Soundtrack was released on September 12, 2008.[40] [41] The soundtrack, consisting of the game'southward 35 music tracks, includes a booklet with liner notes written by the Inti Creates audio team, as well as artwork and data on the viii Robot Masters.[42] The Rockman nine Arrange Anthology was released on October 10, 2008.[forty] [41] This album features remixes of the game's songs arranged by Yamada, his team, and several guest composers from by entries in the Mega Human being serial.[28] [43]

Mega Man 9 has received generally positive reviews from gaming magazines and websites. The WiiWare, XBLA, and PSN versions of the game currently hold aggregate percentages of 83, 82, and 77 respectively on Metacritic.[50] [51] [52] 1UP.com gave the game a B+, praising its old-school aesthetic and challenge.[44] IGN gave the game an viii.half-dozen/10 and awarded it with an "Editor's Option" award beyond all platforms and praised it for "having some of the best level blueprint in the series".[46] The Official Nintendo Magazine gave the game 90% noting that "information technology will keep you busy for hours" and "screams retro". Information technology did mark it down because "information technology might be too frustrating".[47] Still, Edge gave the game a score of half dozen out of ten. The magazine responded positively to the game'due south enemy design, though criticized the game for trying to fit into the "retro cool category" and being not as proficient as the previous games.[45]

The WiiWare version of Mega Man 9 has received additional recognition from various publications. In Nintendo Ability 'southward "Game of the Year" section, Mega Homo ix was scored every bit the best WiiWare game of 2008 by both readers and staff.[53] Information technology was nominated for "Best Platforming Game for the Wii" by IGN in its 2008 video game awards.[54] Information technology was also nominated for "Best Wii Game" and "Best Downloadable Console Game" on GameSpot'due south "Best of 2008".[55] [56] Gaming Target selected it as part of their "40 Games We'll Yet Exist Playing From 2008" feature.[57] IGN has considered Mega Man ix every bit one of the top 15 WiiWare games bachelor.[58] In 2011, IGN listed Mega Man 9 as the 5th-best WiiWare game and the 14th-all-time PSN game of all time.[59] [60]

Although no fiscal figures for Mega Man nine accept been released, Christian Svensson (Capcom'south Vice President of Business Development) debunked all sales rumors soon after its launch, stating that the company was "charily optimistic" about its operation on WiiWare.[61] Both Svensson and Capcom's Seth Killian stated months later that the visitor was "definitely happy" with the sales of the game.[62] [63] Inafune also expressed his satisfaction with the game's success, proclaiming that information technology far exceeded their expectations.[24] [64] A follow-up game, Mega Man x, was released in March 2010 for WiiWare, PSN, and XBLA. This sequel as well features retro-style graphics, sound, and gameplay.[24] [65] [66] Mega Man 9 was afterwards released on the PlayStation four, Xbox One, and PC equally part of Mega Man Legacy Drove 2, which also made a slight change of assuasive the player to unlock all of the old downloadable content.[19]
